SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS FOR GAS COOLED THERMAL REACTORS OF THE CALDER HALL TYPE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4282258

The principles of reactor safety are considered, with particular reference to the Calder Hall type of gascooled thermal reactor. The need for codes of practice for engineering design in the atomic energy field is discussed, and the aims of such cedes are defined. The limits of radiation exposure, both for occupational workers and the general public, are discussed. The principles of safety adopted in design to ensure that in normal operation the reactor is at all times operating within safe limits are considerod, and the factors governing these limits are discussed. In assessing the safety of a reactor system, it is necessary to predict the cause and course of possible fault conditions and also to consider the possibilities of multiple failures. In particular, fault conditions occasioned by loss of coolant flow or by loss of coolant pressure are examined, and design considerations intended to minimize the effects of such failures are discussed.
