The effects of oxygen and acetylene flows, ratios of these flows, different reglons of flame mantle viewed, and various cations and anions on the fiame spectrum of yttriuun were studied. Two promlnent band heads, cresting at 597 and 613 m mu , were found to be very intense, quite narrow, and only slightly degraded to the red. Only at a slit width of 0.030 mm, or less, whlch corresponds to a spectral band width of 1.05 m mu at 600 m mu , are the two bands resolved from each other and from the sodium line at 589.0 and 589.6 m mu . The widths of the yttrium bands at one-half the net peak height are 6 and 5 m mu , respectively. Concerning the variation of the emission intensity as a function of the ratio of oxygen flow to acetylene flow for fixed oxygen flow, the maximum emission intensity occurs when the ratio is between 3.0 and 3.8. An examination of the emission intensity as a function of the flame region viewed revealed that the region of maximum intensity occurred immediately above the inner cone. The extent to which other elements interfere with the emission intensity of yttrium from the organic aerosol is also discussed. (P.C.H.)
