Lloyd's Register of Shipping's''Provisional Rules for Nuclear Ships'' is discussed, and these rules are related to hull design, materials of construction, and longitudinal strength. The requirements for collision and grounding protection are explained and the design criteria to be adopted in order to meet the rapid decelerations consequent upon collision and grounding, are stated. In addition, the basic considerations to be examined for the design of containment vessel support structure are discussed. In order to demonstrate the hull requirements a design for a nuclear powered passenger ship is outlined. Rules relating to reactor and main machinery installation are discussed, and some of the safety requirements are examined in relation to a suggested reactor layout for the passenger ship. A reactor vesseh and containment vessel design is proposed in order to demonstrate the rules for pressure components, and an electrical distribution system suitable for installation in the ship is outlined. A brief survey of the specific requirements of the reactor core and fuel assemblies, decay heat removal system, reactor control instrumentation, is offered and an examination of the problems associated with defueling and effluent disposal, with particular emphasis on the passenger ship installation is given.
