The general background and the philosophy of the rules for nuclear- powered ships are described. The provisional rules are outlined for the architecture of the ship, the construction of the hull, containment vessel, secondary or safety shielding to containment vessel, nuclear assembly, special requirements relative to the propulsion apparatus and auxiliaries, and special requirements relative to the outfitting of nuclear ships. The rules for waste disposal and refueling and defueling are not yet defined. (D.L.C.)
