HOT ROTARY FORGING OF URANIUM TUBING

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4828490
A special, hot rotary forging machine was used to forge extruded normal U tubes to fuel core blanks that were subsequently machined to reactor-grade fuel cores. The dimensional tolerances of the forged core blanks were substantially better than in those of the extruded feed stock, both in OD and in wall thickness variation. As a result, the fabrication of the blanks to fuel cores required less machining time and generated less scrap than normally experienced in the conventional rolling. machining, drilling route. An analysis of grain size and texture revealed that the structures of the forged cores were equivalent in every respect to the normal production product. The U forging test was preceded by a test using steel feed stock to determing operating parameters and establish tooling requirements for the main test. (auth)
