A MACHINING CLEAN-UP STUDY OF EXTRUDED URANIUM (MARK V-B) TUBES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4171520
Good surface quality and low slug rejection rates showed that the OD machining stock could be reduced on extruded uranium tubes (Mark V-B). Normally 0.125 in. is added to the desired tube OD dimensions for surface clean-up purposes. Data obtained revealed that a lesser amount, approximately 0.050 in., is needed for clean-up purposes. The reduction in OD machining stock could result in approximately a 9% increase in metal yield per extruded billet. The yield increase could represent a significant saving during production runs and subsequent processing of the extruded tubes (machining, metal recycle). Therefore, OD machining stock of 0.125, the current practice, appears to be costly and wasteful. Step-down machining data revealed that the largest decrease in OD machining stock can be made by employing lubricant-coated billets, either as-cast or machined, and an integral die design. The lubricated, machined billets presented the lowest clean-up values. All average clean-up values obtained were significantly lower than the amount of OD stock (0.125 in.) presently designed on extruded uranium tubes (Mark V-B). Other pertinent results revealed that significantly lower extrusion upset (break-through) and run pressures were obtained employing lubricated billets and an integral die design in comparison to employing conventional extrusion parameters.
