The thermoelectric properties of rare earth compounds containing S, Te, and Se are being investigated. A total of 45 chalcogenide compounds was prepared. Various Gd, La, Y, Sm, Yb, Er, and Pr selenides; Gd and Y tellurides; and Gd and Y sulfides were prepared. A mixed Y-Gd selenide was also synthesized. Resistivity and Seebeck voltages were determined, and x-ray diffraction analysis was made. La and Sm selenides were isostructural with the Gd compound. Neither the Gd telluride nor sulfide appeared promising as the selenide. (auth)
