Eleven rare earth chalcogenides, as well as one rare earth ternary chalcogenide, were investigated to evaluate their potential as thermoelectric materials. The compounds are the sesquiselenides of Y, La, Pr, Sm, Er, Yb, and Gd: the Gd and Y sesquisulfides and sesquitellurides; and the ternary Dy sesquitelluride-sesquiselenide. Specific processing parameters developed for gadolinium sesquiselenide are defined and their effects on electrical and physical characteriestics are described. A tentative correlation between the observed second phase and a vitreous state in materials having anomalous conduction is presented. (auth)
