PROGRESS REPORT NO. 14 ON PROPERTIES OF CARBONS AND GRAPHITES , FEBRUARY 1, 1962 TO APRIL 30, 1962

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4828461
Studies are being made of the elastic properties of carbons and graphites at room and high temperatures in relation to some of the fabrication and structural variables and of the heat conduction and diffusivity of graphites at high temperatures. A satisfactory performance of the high temperature elasticity equipment with new electronics was obtained. The results of measuremerts of the dynamic modulus and internal friction coefficiert obtained at room temperature in a comparison of a conventional graphite, pyrolytic graphite, and glassy carbon are presented. A sensitivity of the internal friction to the presence of internal defects introduced by neutron irradiation was observed. Detailed high-temperature studies of heat conductivity were carried out on a soft filler-hard binder carbon. (M.C.G.)
