PROGRESS REPORT NO. 16 ON PROPERTIES OF CARBONS AND GRAPHITES , AUGUST 1, 1962-OCTOBER 31, 1962
Elastic properties of carbons and graphites at room and at high temperature in relation to some of the fabrication and structural variables are discussed. The heat conduction and the heat diffusivity of graphites at high temperature were investigated. The results of measurements of Young's Modulus at room temperature for a raw coke carbon (SF-SB) as function of heat-treatment temperature are reported. Using the improved apparatus, the temperature dependence of the Young's Modulus was reinvestigated from baked to graphitized state for three kinds of carbons (SF-SB, SF-HB, and HF-SB) and for 2200 heat- treated pyrolytic graphite as well as for ZTA graphite in various directions. A study of mechanlcal energy losses and of the resonance frequency (elastic modulus) at low temperature (down to liquid hydrogen temperature) have led to a discovery of anomalous temperature dependence. In polycrystalline graphite, a Bordoni-type peak in internal friction was found at 50 deg K. With decrease of temperature the elastic modulus increases for all carbons, thus giving a minimum somewhere around room temperature or above. The temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity and electric resistivity was reinvestigated for a SF-HB carbon heat treated to 1200 deg , 1500 deg , and 1800 deg C. Finally, exhaustive studies were performed with the steady'' sinusoidal heat flow method in order to increase the accuracy of the results and pin down the factors responsible for the scatter of the data. The thermal diffusivity was investigated for a commercial graphite (SC) in the temperature range 60 to 1230 deg C. (auth)
