RADIATION EFFECTS ON MITOCHONDRIA (in German)

Journal Article · · Strahlentherapie (West Germany)
OSTI ID:4828460
By means of electron-microscopic examinations with the help of the thin- cutting technique, the cytomorphological effect of lethal and compatible x-ray doses on Paramecium caudatum and Paramecium aurelia were analyzed. The destiny of degenerating mitochondria after radiation action in the form of graded examinations can now be carried out continuously by the electron microscope. The influence of compatible doses changes the chondriom quantitatively: a part of the mitochondria are fully demolished. a part of the mitochondria'' survived.'' Morphological references resulted in a disturbance in the fatty acid oxidation of the mitochondria. A light-microscopically described lipophanerosis (structural- loosening) allows itself to be directly proved electron-optically. Electron microscopy reveals itself as the quickest of all known methods so far, i.e.. 15 min after radiation with a compatible dose to prove morphological changes of the cytoplasma and the mitochondria.
