CERAMOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES: I. SINGLE PHASE, POLYCRYSTALLINE, HARD MATERIALS

Journal Article · · American Ceramic Society Bulletin (U.S.)
OSTI ID:4828455
The preparation of polished sections of hard, single phase, ceramic materials for microscopic examination in reflected light is discussed. Techniques which have proved successful in the grinding, polishing, and etching with a minimum of pull-outs'' of MgO, BeO, UO/sub 2/, ZrO/sub 2/, Cr/sub 2/O/ sub 3/, and Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ are described. Comparisons of variations in techniques are made by means of photomicrographs. The use of hard and relatively dry laps with application of light pressure during grinding and polishing with low nap cloths are recommended. (auth)
