RADIATION DAMAGE IN CERAMICS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Eng.
OSTI ID:4019554
The effects of reactor-type irradiations on ceramic materials are studied. Discussions are given of damage mechanisms, damage minimization, and recovery from damage. Irradiation-induced changes of properties are outlined for ceramic materials used as fuels, moderators, control elements, and structural members. Materials considered include UO/sub 2/, UC, Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, BeO, MgO, graphite, SiO/sub 2/, ZrSiO/sub 4/, ZrO/sub 2/, TiO/sub 2/, MgO - Al/sub 2/O/ sub 3/, 2MgO - 2A1/sub 2/O/sub 3/ - 5Si O/sub 2/, and SiC; and UO/sub 2/, UN, and UC dispersed in austenitic stainless steel, graphite, refractory oxides, and SiC.
