Dividing the tibia of 3-week-old mice into 5 parts, the variations of alkaline phosphatase activity, P/sup 32/ uptake, and their pathological changes were examined. When the tibia was damaged severely in parts of the epiphysis and metaphysis with a single x irradiation of 1000 r the recovery was slow. The retardation of bone growth increased with the dose and it was found that the tibia showed a shortening in length following a dose of 1000 r, and with a dose of over 2000 r the increase of the weight was restricted in the irradiated tibia. P3/ uptake in the tibia decreased exponentially with a dose up to 3000 r, except in parts of the metaphysis. The depression of P/sup 32/ uptake in the tibia produced by fractionated x irradiation was less than that produced by a single x irradiation in the same x-ray dose, and its manifestation varied essentially with the fractionated dose and the time interval.
