INVESTIGATION OF THE ALLOYS IN THE TITANIUM-NIOBIUM SYSTEM (in Russian)

In view of their unique properties Ti and Nb have found novel application in recent years. Ti and its alloys present the advantage of favorable mecbanical and corrosionresisting properties combined vwith relatively low specific weight while the low capture cross section of Nb indicates its usefulness in the atomic industry. In order to establish the properties of the Ti- Nb- Cr ternary system, the Ti- Nb binary was investigated in the range from 40 to 90% Nb. The mixtures were prepared in an arc furnace with W electrodes, soaking them at l500 deg C for 6 hours at a vacuum of 10- mm of Hg. X-ray- diffraction studies showed only the lines of a phase containing beta solid solutions in both annealed and quenched samples. It is concluded that the system consists of a continuous series of solid solutions without the presence of TiNb type metallic compounds. The solid solutions presented a voIumecentered cubic lattice.
