TOTAL CROSS SECTION OF K$sup -$ MESONS ON NUCLEONS IN THE MOMENTUM REGION 630 Mev/c TO 1100 Mev/c (thesis)

The total cross sections of K/sup -/ mesons in hydrogen and deuterium were measured at 630 to 1100 Mev/c. The K/sup -/-n total cross sections were obtained from the hydrogen and deuterium data. These cross sections, with an accuracy of better than 5%, were measured at the Berkeley Bevatron by counter techniques. Two high-resolution velocity-selecting Cherenkov counters were used to select the K- mesons. The momentum of the K/sup -/ beam was measured with a counter telescope and an analyzing magnet. The K/sup -/-p and K/sup -/-d cross sections were measured at nine and five representative momenta respectively. A well-defined resonance appears in the K/sup -/-p total cross section at about 1050 Mev/c K/sup -/ momentum (laboratory system). The neutron cross sections do not have enough statistical accuracy to enable us to infer any structure. (auth)
