A knowledge of L Auger yields is of importance in the study of nuclides which decay by orbital capture. An investigation of the electron spectrum of Au/ sup 199/ to determine the L Auger yields of mercury was made with a magnetic spectrometer. The beta spectrum was found to be composed of three components whose end points are 251 plus or minus 10, 302 plus or minus 10, and 460 plus or minus 10 kev. The conversion line spectra indicated the presence of three gamma rays with energies of 49 plus or minus 1, 159 plus or minus 1, and 209 plus or minus 2 kev. Relative conversion coefficients were calculated. The crude total L Auger yield of mercury for the distribution of L vacancies produced by the decay of Au/sup 199/ was found to be 0.629 plus or minus 0.035. An attempt was made to account for the effect of CosterKronig transitions in the calculatibn of L subshell yields, but it was not possible to do this with the data. Crude values of two of the subshell Auger yields were obtained. These were 0.577 plus or minus 0.086 for L/sub II/ and 0.83 plus or minus 0.12 for L/sub III/. (auth)
