A study on the effect of age and prevous radiation exposure on the mortality rate, survival under daily radiation exposure, LD50, and rate of recovery from radiation injury was completed. A total of approximately 4000 RF/J female mice were utilized. When mice were irradiated early in life the death rate was higher in the irradiated population than in the control at all time intervals after exposure. The population irradiated with 400 r at 90 days of age appeared to lose about 120 days of life when only causes of death other than leukemia were considered. The minimum induction period for leukemia was not affected by radiation exposure. The LD/sub 50/-30 days declined linearly with age in both the irradiated and control populations. The mean survival time under exposure to 100 r per day showed a complex decline with age. The rate of recovery from radiation injury declined linearly with age. The irradiated population showed a uniformly lower repair rate than the control population. These studies are being continued in a population of 6000 BDF/sub 1/ hybrids. The effects of sex and strain difference on radioinduced life shortening is being evaluated in 4 inbred and 2 hybrid strains. A search for correlates of life span was initiated utilizing 23 inbred strains. The early time course of injury and recovery in the intestinal tract and marrow is being investigated in an attempt to test certain cellular models of radiation effects. Life table data and measurements of various physiological and morphological parameters are being obtained. (M.C.G.)
