Two coils are wrapped around a glass cylinder to produce a rapidly rising magnetic field in a mirror geometry. The cylinder thus formed is 5 cm in diameter and 50 cm in length and is filled with air or deuterium to some known pressure between 0.4 and 0.001 mm mercury. The total plasma current is measured with a Rogowski coil inserted in the center of the cylinder. The wave form of current in plasma is very different from that of the primary current. In order to determine the behavior or the confinement time of plasma, the light beams from the plasma in radial and axial directions, and the light from the main gap are guided to a streak camera simultaneously. The total number of neutrons emitted during one discharge is detected with an activation counter. The electron density in the plasma is observed with the 35-Gc band microwave apparatus. Based on experiments and magnetohydrodynamical assumptions, theoretical analyses of phenomena occurring in plasma during discharge are examined. (auth)
