A reactor fuel element is designed with a readily demountable coupling between two components so that, after irradiation in a reactor, the demounting can be effected by remote handling equipment. The fuel element comprises fuel members supported in a tubular housing by a tie rod, an extension oi the housing movable axially, and a coupling between the extension and the tie rod. The coupling comprises a plurality of latch members within the extension and arranged to engage with the tie rod under load of the fuel members and housing. (D.L.C.)
