EFFECT OF LOCAL X-IRRADIATION ON THE PHAGOCYTE ABILITY OF LEUCOCYTES

The whole body, the upper half of the trunk, or 4 legs only were irradiated in rabbits with 100 r. While the effect on the WBC was the most severe in the group totally irradiated, the other groups showed no change. A considerable decrease in the phagocytic ability of the neutrophil leukocytes resulted. This effect decreased in the order of whole body, upper body, and 4 legs' irradiation. The phagocytic ability seemed to show less individual variation and was more sensitive to radiation than the change in the RBC or WBC. (auth)
