Spin-Lattice Relaxation in Rare-Earth Salts

The theory of Elliot and Stevens for rare-earth ion interactions with static ionic surroundings is generalized phenomenologically to represent rare- earth ion interactions with lattice vibrational modes. Evaluation of the spinlattice interaction is performed in terms of a few constants. One- and two- phonon processes are investigated, and relaxation times for non-Kramers and Kramers salts are computed. (L.N. N.)
