THE RELATIVE DEUTERON/PROTON YIELD FROM 45 MEV BREMSSTRAHLUNG IRRADIATION OF COPPER

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
A new method was developed and used to measure the photo-deuteron to photoproton ratio for copper irradiated with 45- Mev maximum energy bremsstrahlung. The photo-particles leaving the 50 mu m thick target were deflected by a magnetic field in an evacuated chamber and were detccted with nuclear endulsion plates. The particles were identified by using their ranges in enmulsion and angles of entrance to retrace their paths back to the target. Of the 1614 tracks detected, 1134 were due to particles from the target. Of these 1114 were identified as protons and only 20 were found to be deuterons, giving a deuteron to proton ratio of 0.018 plus or minus 0.009. This result is not in agreement with the much larger values found for this ratio hy other investigators using nuclear emulsion grain-counting techniques and a magnetic cloud chamber method. (auth)
