Tests on polymerizing propylene wrth SO/sub 2/ by Co/sup 60/ gamma irradiation showed that the sulfur groups in chains or branches of the copolymer molecules have a good affinity for dye. Hence, the dyeability of synthetic fibers may be improved by using this ionizing radiation method. Tests were made with the 120-c Co/sup 60/ facilities at the Hiroshima Univ. on nylon, Tetron, Orlon, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, and polypropylene fibers at a dose rate of 5 x 10/sup 4/ r/hr. Results showed that the existence of air and SO/sub 2/ during irradration promoted the dye properties of polyolefin fibers with Celliton Fast Red GG and Dia Basic Magenta when doses were above 10/ sup 5/ r, and above 10/sup 4/ r for polypropylene and polyethylene fibers. The mechanical properties of polyolefin fibers gamma -irradiated in a vacuum and in SO/sub 2/ are compared. (OID)
