AN INVESTIGATION OF THE POSSIBILITY OF INCREASING THERMAL STABILITY OF POLYOLEFIN FIBERS BY MEANS OF IONIZING RADIATION

It is known that the polyolefin fibers used in industry have low thermal stability. These fibers and their products have the following disadvantages: irreversible shrinking at increased temperatures, and considerable decrease in strength with increase in temperature. Studies were made of the possibility of increasing the thermal stability of polyolefin fibers by radioactive radiation and of the behavior of polypropylene and polyethylene fibers. The shaped and drawn fiber was irradinted with Co/sup 60/ gamma rays in a vacuum at a dosage of 0.7 to 0.8 Mrad/hr. The increase in thermal stability of the fiber after irradiation was determined mainly by the change in shrinking at different temperatures between 50 and 1OO deg . The change in strength and elongation at increased teraperatures of nonirradiated fibers and of polyethylene fibers irradiated with different doses of gamma rays was investigated also. Results showed that the shrinking of polypropylene fibers at increased temperatures was reduced considerably by irradiation, but there was also a considerable deterioration of the mechanical properties. ln the polyethylene fiber, irradiation reduced the flowing of the fiber at increased temperatures but did not reduce the losses in strength at such temperatures.
