The operation of a pilot plant (l00 gal. milk/hr) designed for the removal of Sr/sup 90/ from milk by ion exchange treatment is described. The process, which will remove about 90% of the Sr/sup 90/ in milk, involves the steps of charging the resin bed, acidifying the milk to pH 5.3 to 5.4 with citric acid, filtering the milk through a column of cationic ion exchange resin (of the nuclear sulphonic acid type), neutralizing the milk to a normal pH with dilute KOH, cleaning and sanitizing the resin, and finally regenerating the resin. Work is in progress to lower the costs of the process by r-educing the quantities of salt used for regenerating the resin. (Pub. Health Eng. Abstr.)
