DEVELOPMENT OF MINIATURE SiC NEUTRON DETECTORS. Quarterly Progress Report for Period Ending September 30, 1961

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4827361
Work on the development of miniature silicon carbide neutron detectors is reported. A major problem area is the development of surface junctions suitable for neutron detection. Diffusion techniques appear highly promising for the production of such junctions. Accordingly, a new diffusion furance for accomplishing this has been set up and a diffusion process designed. Another important area is the evaluation of the junctions under simulated operatring conditions. A high temperature furnace, to be used in conjunction with the Van de Graaff generator, for irradiation arnealing and counting studies, is being constructed. A brief, preliminary study of annealing of radiation damage in bulk SiC was conducted. (auth)
