The imaging qualities and the thermal neutron and gam a sensitivitics of several neutron imaging detectors, includ ing the indium activation-transfer technique, the direct indium foil-film exposure technique, a Li/sup 6/F-ZnS(Ag) phosphor screen with film, and a B/sup 10/-ZnS(Ag) phosphor scre with film, were studied. It was observed that, although sharpness of the image suffered somewhat, the phospho screens were l,000 to l0,000 times faster than the direct indium exposure or indium transfer technique. Neutron exposures of about 5 x l03 n/mm/sup 2/ were sufficient to produce an optical density of l.0 on type F film with the osphors. The gamma response of all of these imaging was sufficiently low that the gamma intensity in the thermal neutron beam does not affect the image. The degradation effect of l-', 3'-, and 6'' thicknesses of graphite scatterer behind the absorption object in the 5'' diameterreactor neutron beam was demonstrated. Also the effect of a l', 3-', and 6'' object to detector spacing was determined There was an appreciable image degradation due to the large effective focal spot'' size of the reactor neutron source. Various applications of neutron radiography are discussed. (auth)
