NATURAL RADIOCARBON IN THE SUBSURFACE WATERS OF THE CARIBBEAN

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4827086
Presented at the 43rd Annual Amer-ican Geophysical Union Meeting. The natural radiocarbon concentration of 30 subsurface water samples from the Caribbean was measured, and the results were compared among the different basins and with previously reported Lamont samples from the nearby Atlantic. The basins of the northern Caribbean showed higher C/sup 14/C sup 12/ ratios for waters below still depths than the basins to the south. North of the Jamaica rrdge four samples below l800 meters depth in the Cayman basin had an average DELTA C/sup 14/ value of -73 per mil. This is not significantiy different from the value at the sill depth of the Windward Passage through which replenishment takes place. South of the Jamaica ridge five samples from below sill depths in the Colombia basin averaged about 20 per mil lower C/sup 14/C/sup 12/ ratio than the Cayman and the Atlantic water at sill depth outside the Anegada-Virgin Passage through which deep water renewal takes place. These results indicated a slower circulation and longer- residence time for the deeper water of the Venezuela and Colombia basins than the Cayman and Yucatan basins to the north. (auth)
