APPLICATION OF IONIZATION $alpha$ SPECTROMETER WITH TIME ANALYZER FOR DETERMINING HALF-LIFE PERIODS (in Russian)

Descriptions are given of an ionization alpha spectrometer with a time analyzer for determining half life by correlating alpha pulse distribution time with the pulse time of the parent substance. The Po/sup 215/ half life measured with the alpha spectrometer showed a higher degree of accuracy (0.3%) than previous data derived with a rotational disc. In the suggested device alpha particles are separated by energy, thus reducing the random coincidence background and enabling measurements without interference from alpha particles of other energies. The multichannel analyzer is capable of much faster performance than integral or differential methods. The application of a 4 pi counter with low background permits measurements of half lives up to 10 sec. (R.V.J.)
