AN INTERCOMPARISON OF 4$pi$$beta$ PROPORTIONAL COUNTING TECHNIQUES IN THE UK, USA AND CANADA

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4826983
An intercomparison of beta counting methods used in the assaying of Sr/ sup 90/--Y/sup 90/, Na/sup 22/ and Co/sup 60./ l was organized among laboratories in the USA, Canada, and the UK. Results from this comparison have given information on the relative accuracy with which unknown radioactive solutions can be assayed and on the efficiencies of the various types of 4 pi beta counter commonly in use. These data are compared with the true disintegration rates obtained by 4 pi beta - gamma coincidence counting and calibrated 4 pi gamma reference chamber techniques. Source preparation procedures including source conductivity, absorption from the solution, and self-absorption losses are discussed. (auth)
