The design and operation of 4 pi beta-counter, filled with P-10 gas (10% CH/sub 4/, 90% A) and using thin gold-coated collodion source mounts, is described. A plateau of 175 V was achieved. Conditions for obtaining the optimum plateau are discussed and the influence of negative ion formation due to oxygen and organic solvents is demonstrated. Absolute disintegration rates for Na/sup 24/ and Au/sup 198/ sources, measured by the counter, agree within 1 to 2% with those found by BETA - gamma coincidence counting. (auth)
