IMPROVEMENTS IN METHODS OF PREPARING SINTERED BERYLLIUM OXIDE PRODUCTS

A method is outlined for producing sintered beryllium oxide shapes, e.g., bricks, for use as neutron shields. The method comprises adding l% mineral acid or a beryllium salt thereof to beryllium hydroxide, calcining, adding a small amount of a neutron-absorbent compound, and sintering the mixture to form masses which are very dense, homogcneous and free from detects. The neutron- absorbent material may be boron carbide, boric hydroxide, or cadmium oxide. Examples of the method are given in which beryllium oxide bricks were made with 10 cm x l0 cm x 5 cm dimensions. (D.L.C.)
