THE EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON POLYETHYLENE. I. THE EFFECTS OF RADIATION ON THE VISCOELASTICITY

The concentration of crosslinkages was determined by measuring the visco- elasticity of gamma -irradiated polyethylene (using 3kc of Co/sup 60/ at 4.2 x 10/sup 5/ r/hr up to dose of 10 to 160 Mr) in the rubber elasticity temperature range (room tem perature or 150 deg C) with a creep tester. Results indicated that (1) the concentration or crosslinkages in the melted state was proportional to the radiation dose; (2) after irradiation, the saturation value reached in the crystalline state varied with respect to the tyne of polymer (linear < branched) or to the heat treatment condition (slowly cooled < quenched); and (3) branched polyethylene decomposed more easily than linear polyethylene.
