S>The specific heat- and specific volume-temperature relationships of polyethylene irradiated with gamma rays were determined, and the depression of the melting temperature of the irradiated polyethylene is discussed. The melting temperature of polyethylene irradiated at room temperature decreased with increasing radiation dosage up to 40 Mr, but it did not decrease above this radiation dosage because of the saturation of the concentration of crosslinkages. The melting temperature of the quenched polymer irradiated at room temperature decreased much more than that of a slowly cooled polymer because the number of amorphous regions to be crosslinked was increased by quenching. The melting temperature of the polymer decreased much more by irradiation in the molten state than in the solid state, but the lowering of the melting temperature in the molten state did not stop at 50 Mr because of the absence of the crystalline region in which crosslinking did not occur in the molten state.
