The lower energy levels of Cu/sup 64/ and their decay were studied using the Ni/sup 64/ (p,n gamma ) reaction. The threshold of the reaction calculated from the nuclear mass balance is 2450 plus or minus 6 kev (Q = --2412 kev), while the experimentally measured threshold is 2.50 Mev (Q = --2.46 Mev). The reaction was studied with a scintillation gamma spectrometer and a 60-channel analyzer. The 1- mu -thick target, bombarded by 2.3 to 3.0 Mev protons, consisted of 9.7% Ni/sup 58/ 6.1% Ni/sup 60/, 0.4% Ni/sup 61/, 4.0% Ni/sup 62/, and 79.8% Ni/sup 64/. The gamma spectrum produced by 3.0 Mev proton bombardment (l20, E/sub gamma / = 600 kev, and the Cu/sup 64/ energy levels are plotted and analyzed. It is shown that the observed l20-kev gamma line be low the (p,n gamma ) reaction threshold is not related to any reactions on Ni/sup 64/. (R.V.J.)
