COULOMB EXCITATION WITH HEAVY IONS (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4824569
A program is described for development of a source of multiply charged heavy ions suitable for use in the ORNL 5.5-Mv Van de Graaff accelerator, and use of this source in studying, by Coulomb excitation, the low lying states of some odd-A nuclei, primarily in the region A = 47 to 75. The character of transltions from Coulomb excitation of 8 odd-A nuclei from Ti/sup 47/ to As/sup 75/ was studied in detail. The angular distribution measurements provided strong evi dence for unique spin assignments for 4 of the levels which wsre excited. Specific observations are included on the relation of the data presented to the shell model and collective aspects of the low energy structure of some of the nuclei. Additional Coulomb excitation with lighter ions or more energetic heavy ions is recommended for these nuclei. (J.R.D.)
