PHOTOSPALLATION OF NEON NUCLEI (in Russian)

The photospallation of neon nuclei was studied on a Wilson chamber synchronized with a synchrotron in order to determine the mechanism of electromagnetic emission interactions with nuclei, the mechanism of nuclear reactions, nuclear structure, and nuclear forces. Various types of neon reactions with charged particle yields were recorded with special apparatus that produced a stereoscopic image. The curve for the effective cross section of ( gamma ,p) reaction was constructed. The maximum cross section is (11.48 plus or minus 0.81) mb at photon energies of 18 to 20 Mev. Cross sections are calculated for various Ne reactions. The integral absorption cross section 0 = (0.588 plus or minus 0.0085) bn/Mev; the logarithmic moment of absorption cross section sigma /sub b/ = (17.19 plus or minus 0.025)b. The mean square radius of neon nuclear charge distribution R/sub n/ = 2.529 x 10/sup -13/ cm, and the radius constant r/sub o/ = 1.183 - 10/sup 13/ cm were found from the value sigma /sub b/ . The magnitude sigma /sub -2/, related to nuclear polarization, was calculated to be 0.619 mb/Mev, in good agreement with the theoretical value obtained with the collective nuclear model. The angular distributions for ( gamma ,p), ( gamma ,pn), and ( gamma ,p alpha ) confirm the direct dipole absorption of gamma quanta by an individual nucleon. The observed isotropy at E/sub p/ < 5 Mev and sharply expressed forward direction at E/sub p/ > 5 Mev in ( gamma ,pn) reactions indicate the contribution of quasi-deuteron photon absorption at high energies.
