Photodisintegration of He3

The photodisintegration of He/sup 3/ by the reactions He3( gamma,p)d and He3( gamma,n)2p was studied by placing a cloud chamber filled with He3 in a magnetic field in a bremsstrahlung beam. The ( gamma,p) cross section was found to have a broad maximum at about 18 Mev and a maximum value of 1.2 mb. A ( sigma-1) value of 3 plus or minus 0.3 mb was obtained for this reaction, as well as an integral cross section of 30 plus or minus 3 Mev mb. Assuming equality of the yields for the two reactions gave an integral cross section for photon absorption of 60 plus or minus 6 Mev mb, in agreement with theoretical values. (D.C.W.)
