INTERACTION BETWEEN 153-Mev NEGATIVE $pi$-MESONS AND HELIUM (in Russian)

The interaction between 153 Mev pi /sup -/ mesons and He/sup 4/ nuclei is investigated with a high pressure diffusion cloud chamber operating in a magnetic field. The total pi -He/sup 4/ interaction cross section, elastic scattering cross section, and cross sections for a number of inelsstic processes are determined by measuring the total pi /sup -/ track length. The angular distribution of elastic pi /-He/sup 4/ scattering is of a diffractional nature with a distinct minimum (80 deg ) and a secondary maximum (100 deg ). Optical model calculations assuming a square well complex potential V = V/sub R/ + iV/sub 1/ show that best agreement with the experimental data can be obtained for V/sub R/ = -(18 plus or minus 7) Mev and V/sub 1/ = -(63 plus or minus 6) Mev, r/ sub 0/ =1.5 x 10/sup -13/ cm. These values are in good agreement with those computed by Frank, Gammel and Watson from the relation between the optical potential and forward scattering amplitude for free pi -p scattering. The angular distribution of quasielastic pi /sup -/ scattering on bound nucleons is compared with the calculations of Watson and Zemach. The probability of multiple pi /sup -/ scattering in the nucleus and the charge exchange scattering cross section are estimated. (auth)
