A CERENKOV STUDY OF BOUND MUON DECAY

Journal Article · · Dissertation Abstr.
OSTI ID:4823997
The bound muon decay rate, lambda /sub d/(Z), was measured in Zn and Fe using a cosmic ray counter. The counter had 2 ft/sup 2/ scintillators and a 2 ft/ sup 2/ water Cherenkov counter in the telescope to select muons stopping in the target; decay electrons were detected by a thin scintillator and were absorbed in a 4 ft/sup 3/ CCl/sub 4/ Cherenkov counter so that, in addition to the decay curves, a rough comparative spectrum between positive and negative muon decays was obtained. The decay electron energies and the decay times were deter-mined by measuring pulse heights and the distance between pulses on pictures taken of oscilloscope traces. The composite time distribution of decay electrons was obtained in Al, Zn, and Fe. Al was used to eliminate the need to know the decay electron detection efficiencies assuming that the decay rate in Al is equal to the free decay rate. Values of lambda /sub d// lambda /sub o/= 1.070 plus or minus 0.094 for Fe and lambda /sub d// lambda / sub o/ = 0.973 plus or minus 0.086 for Zn were obtained. In addition to the error quoted, there were systematic errors of the order of 3% or 4%. While the results did not permit verification of the theoretical predictions nor of the anomaly at Z = 26, a study of the empirical spectrum indicated that if the anomaly does exist, there is no narrow energy region in which anomalously large numbers of decay electrons are emitted.
