A MEASUREMENT OF THE EFFECT OF THE COULOMB FIELD OF A NUCLEUS ON THE DECAY RATE OF NEGATIVE MUONS

Negative muons brought to rest in matter disappear as a result of two processes. decay aad nuclear capture. The rate of loss in a material of atomic number Z is lambda /sub 1/(Z), given by lambda /sub d/(Z) + lambda /sub d/Z), where lambda /sub d/(Z) and lambda /sub c/(Z) are the decay and capture rates, respectively. Measurements of lambda /sub 1/Z) were made for a number of materials. The rates lambda /sub c/(Z) and lambda /sub d/(Z) may be obtained separately by making a measurement of the stopped fraction of muons which emit an electron, f = lambda /sub d/(Z)/ lambda /sub 1/(Z). Experimental difficulties make an absolute measurement difficult in a single material. (A.C.)
