The recoilless resonance absorption of gamma quanta (Mossbauer effect) was detected in a beta spectrometer by measurement of the conversion electrons occurring in the decay of the absorber nuclei. With this method the 100-kev transition in W/sup 182/ was investigated with metallic tantalum as source and enriched tungsten metal as resonance absorber The L conversion line of the 100- kev radiation surpasses at 22 deg K the background by 44%. From Doppler effect measof the first excited state of determined as T/sub 1/2/ = 1.34 plus or minus 0.l3 x l0/sup -9/ sec. From the temperature dependence of the effect, the Debye temperature of tantalum was measured as 280 plus or minus i 10 deg K. The results show good agreement with other types of measurement, but con tradictory to earlier Mossbauer transmission experiments. (tr -auth)
