The angular and momentum distributions of protons and pi /sup plus or minus /-mesons produced by 8.7 Bev protons, in photographic emulsion stars containing not more than one gray'' and not more than one black'' track, are investigated. It is shown that most of these stars can be regarded as resulting from inelastic interaction between the proton and free or quasi-free nuclear nucleon. Interactions of this type comprise ~25% of the total number of inelastic interactions with nuclei of the emulsion. The angular and momentum distributions of the protons and mesons (in the c.m.s.) are compared with the predictions of the peripheral and central interaction theories. It is shown that part of the interactions with quasi-free nucleons (about 20%) cannot be ascribed to peripheral interactions mainly because of the large emission angles and large transverse momenta of the secondary protons. However, the characteristics of most of the cases agree with the properties expected for peripheral interactions. (auth)
