Studies were made on the effects of x rays on the composition of the tibias of mice. One tibia of each of a series of albino female mice was given an exposure dose of 1200, 1600, or 2000 r of 180 kvp x rays, the remainder of the animal, including the other hind leg, was shielded. At various times up to four months after irradiation the mice were killed, and both tibias were dissected and analyzed. In the group receiving 1600 r, the irradiated tibias lost protein and water, and recovery was complex and incomplete. The irradiated tibias also showed a severe and permanent decrease in ability to metabolize alkaline phosphatase or to fix Sr/sup 89/ over 24 hr periods. In a control group maintained in a hyperthyroid state, it was found that thyroid hormone stimulates both anabolism and catabolism in bone. In almost every case, it was found that radiation damage to the catabolic process was greater than that to the anabolic process. (P.C.H.)
