FAST TUNNEL DIODE CIRCUITS FOR NaI(Tl) DETECTORS

Journal Article · · Nuclear Instr. & Methods
A detector system using a NaI(Tl) crystal, an RCA 6810A photomultiplier, and a tunnel diode discriminator is described. The output from the anode of the high gain photomultiplier corresponding to the emission of three photoelectrons from the photocathode even though it is not big enough to drive an electron tube from cut off to saturation can, however, easily trigger a tunnel diode fast discriminator. The system introduces a 4 m mu sec spread in time when detecting gamma rays over a wide range of energies and only 1 m mu sec when a 10% energy selection is performed using a parallel slow channel. A tunnel diode time-to- pulse height converter having a resolving time better than 2 m mu sec which can be used in conjunction with the system is also described. (auth)
