Natural gas injection into blast furnaces: Operating practice update. A white paper. Topical report, November 1994

OSTI ID:48219
The results of a survey of fuel injection practices at 46 blast furnaces in the United States and Canada, and a comparison of these results with the results of a similar earlier survey, are presented. The survey assesses the effectiveness of injection of supplemental fuels on the performance and productivity of blast furnaces used in metal production, which have been fueled by coke in the past. Environmental considerations and industry requirements have impaired the cost-effectiveness and performance of coke as a fuel. The study finds that since the earlier survey the average coke consumption decreased and the average productivity of the furnaces increased. Industry-wide, average fuel injection has increased from 80 to 127 pounds per ton of hot metal.
