The reactions of HfO/sub 2/ with BaCO/sub 3/, SrCO/sub 3/, and CaCO/sub 3/ a t 1000 to 1200 deg C produced highly porous and friable compounds BaHfO/sub 3/, SrHfO/sub 3/, and CaHfO/sub 3/. The reaction products scale off the surface exposing the HfO2 grains. The rate of the reaction is determined by the rate of chemical reaction with the diffusion surface. (R.V.J.)
