In the present work, the following decomposition reactions were studied: BaCO{sub 3}(s) = BaO(s) + CO{sub 2}(g), SrCO{sub 3}(s) = SrO(s) + CO{sub 2}(g). These two decomposition reactions were compared with the thermal decomposition of CaCO{sub 3}. The thermal decomposition was followed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) simultaneously. Shallow powder beds and high argon flows were employed. The DTA curves show one phase transformation for SrCO{sub 3} and two phase transformations for BaCO{sub 3}. In the case of SrCO{sub 3}, the transformation from rhombohedral to hexagonal occurs at 1,205 K. In the case of BaCO{sub 3}, the transformations from orthorhombic to hexagonal and hexagonal to cubic occur at 1,079 K and 1,237 K respectively. BaCO{sub 3} and BaO will together form an eutectic melt which appears to play an important role in the reaction kinetics. The activation energies for SrCO{sub 3} and BaCO{sub 3} were evaluated to be 267 kJ/mol and 305 kJ/mol respectively.
