Title: IMPROVEMENTS RELATING TO THE EMBODIMENT OF A NUCLEAR REACTOR

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4821339

In the nuclear power plant described, the heat exchangers or boilers are located in a space between primary and secondary biological shielding walls surrounding the closed reactor space. Preferably, the reactor vessel is constituted by a closed inner chamber formed of concrete surrounded by an outer concrete wall positioned so as to afford an annular space which is divided by vertical concrete partitions to form a plurality of closed annular chambers; flow and return passages are provided in the wall between the inner chamber and the annular chambers for the circulation of the reactor coolant between these chambers and inlet and outlet passages are provided in the outer concrete wall for a working fluid which is to receive heat from the coolant. Preferably, the whole concrete structure comprises two vertical concentric cylinders, both based on a single concrete raft, and a concrete roof closes the upper end of the inner cylinder and the upper end of the annular space between the two cylinders, the heat exchangers being placed in said annular space. Suitably, the inner chamber has an apertured concrete floor spaced from said concrete raft and defining with the raft a lower chamber from which the reactor coolant passes through the said apertures into the inner chamber constituting the reactor vessel. This lower chamber is preferably connected by lateral passages with the blowers for the coolant aspirating the coolant from the annular space in which the heat exchangers are situated. (NPO)
